At our school, we believe that children learn best when they feel safe, understood, and valued. To support every child’s social, emotional, and mental health needs, we adopt Therapeutic Thinking—an evidence-informed approach to behaviour management, nurture, and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) support.
What is Therapeutic Thinking?
Therapeutic Thinking moves away from traditional, purely punitive approaches to behaviour. Instead of focusing solely on modifying outward actions through punishment or rewards, it helps us understand the underlying feelings, experiences, and unmet needs behind a child’s behaviour.
Behaviour is a form of communication. By analyzing what a child’s behaviour is telling us, we can proactively adapt our environment, routines, and support strategies to foster long-term personal growth, prosocial choices, and emotional well-being.
How It Supports Our Children
Fosters Equity & Inclusion: Every child receives the tailored support they need to thrive both academically and emotionally.
Builds Safe, Predictable Environments: By focusing on positive relationships, clear boundaries, and empathetic responses, children feel secure in their learning environment.
Encourages Self-Regulation: Rather than relying on external controls, children are guided to understand their emotions and develop lifelong strategies for managing stress and challenging feelings.
Protects Self-Esteem: We separate the child from the behaviour, ensuring every pupil knows they are valued and supported even when they are going through a difficult moment.
Expertise & Training Across Our Team
To ensure our therapeutic culture is embedded in everything we do, we invest heavily in continuous professional development:
Whole-School Therapeutic Training: All staff members across our school have undertaken comprehensive Therapeutic Thinking training, ensuring a consistent and empathetic approach in every classroom and playground.
In-House Therapeutic Thinking Tutors: We have two fully qualified Therapeutic Thinking Tutors on staff who continuously guide, mentor, and refine our approach across the school.
Trauma-Informed Practice: All staff have completed Trauma Informed training, giving us a deep understanding of how early adversity and trauma affect brain development, emotional regulation, and learning.
Specialist Pastoral Leadership: Our Pastoral Lead holds advanced expertise as a Therapeutic Thinking Tutor, Trauma Informed Practitioner, and ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant).
Daily Pastoral & Nurture Support
We recognise that some children require dedicated, ongoing emotional support to access their learning effectively:
Daily Pastoral Check-ins: Our Pastoral Lead checks in daily with any child who requires extra emotional reassurance, helping them start or navigate their day with confidence.
Dedicated Afternoon Nurture Groups: Every afternoon, we run structured nurture support sessions tailored for children who benefit from a calmer, small-group environment to build resilience, social skills, and emotional literacy.
By combining whole-staff expertise, daily pastoral care, and a therapeutic ethos, we create a nurturing school community where every child has the support they need to succeed.
